Ok, I seem to be the only person who has this much trouble, but modern wine labels seem damn near impossible to remove to me. I keep hearing how BBrite or some such will remove labels - maybe for beer, but it seems like most of the wines I drink use waterproof labels attached with hot glue. The way I've finally found to remove the labels is as follows:
1) Put the bottle in the oven at 350 for 5-10 minutes.
2) use a utility knife to scrape the (hot) labels off.
3) let the bottles cool.
4) Remove the remaining glue with either WD40 (works well, smells terrible) or turpentine (works really well, smells less terrible).
5) Wash the bottle with dish soap to remove the organic solvent.
Buying bottles is still a more attractive option, I must say.
